Whoever hires a civil engineer is buying a signature, or the path toward one. The reader checks licensure status before anything else, because a firm that cannot stamp its own drawings has to buy that service outside, and then moves to the built record: what structures, sites and systems were designed, under which code edition, at what contract value, and whether the drawings survived the permitting agency without a redesign.
The rest of the document is read as evidence of that record. Project type and value, the discipline within civil (structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, land development), the software the calculations and drawings actually came out of, and the construction administration that followed design. This guide covers what carries weight in the read, the keywords postings filter on, bullets built on project numbers, what separates an EIT from a licensed project engineer, and a complete sample within the engineering field.

What matters on a civil engineer resume
The credential block goes directly under the contact line, stated exactly. "Professional Engineer (PE), Civil, Texas No. 134872, 2021" is a different document from "Engineer in Training, FE Civil passed 2022," and both beat leaving the reader to guess. Multi-state licensure or NCEES Record comity registrations are worth naming when a firm works across state lines, and the ABET-accredited degree belongs on the education line for the same reason state boards care about it.
Projects carry the experience section, and each needs scale in civil units. Contract value, square footage, span length, lane miles, acreage, pipe diameter and length, detention volume, number of lots or units. A bullet that says "designed roadway improvements" places the candidate nowhere; "designed 2.4 lane miles of urban collector reconstruction, $6.8M construction value, including drainage, ADA ramps and signal modifications" places them precisely. Naming the role held on the project, from design engineer to engineer of record, keeps the claim defensible in an interview.
Codes, agencies and software are the third block. ACI 318, AISC 360, IBC, AASHTO LRFD, ASCE 7, local amendments and the specific municipal, county, state DOT or Corps of Engineers review each project went through. Software by depth: AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, MicroStation, HEC-RAS, HydroCAD, SAP2000, RISA, StormCAD, ArcGIS. Construction phase services (submittal review, RFI response, site observation, punch walks) belong on the page too, since firms bill for them and many candidates omit them entirely.
Keywords job postings look for
These terms show up most often in US civil engineering postings:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license and EIT
- FE exam and ABET-accredited degree
- AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation
- Grading, drainage and site development
- Stormwater management and SWPPP
- HEC-RAS and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
- AASHTO, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, IBC
- Plan and profile sheets, construction documents
- Permitting and agency coordination
- Land development and subdivision design
- Utility design: water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer
- Quantity takeoff and engineer's estimate
- Construction administration, RFIs and submittals
- Geotechnical report interpretation and earthwork
- ArcGIS and survey coordination
They belong in experience bullets first, attached to the project that used them, and in a grouped skills section second. Before applying to a specific posting, the tool to tailor a resume to the job shows which of the description's terms the document still lacks.
Experience bullets that work
Civil bullets improve the moment the project gains dimensions and the agency gains a name:
| Avoid | Better |
|---|---|
| Designed roadway improvements | Designed 2.4 lane miles of urban collector reconstruction, $6.8M construction value, including drainage, ADA ramps and signal modifications under TxDOT criteria |
| Prepared construction documents | Produced 68-sheet plan sets in Civil 3D for a 210-lot subdivision, approved by the city on second review with no redline resubmittal |
| Worked on drainage design | Modeled a 340-acre watershed in HEC-RAS and sized 3 detention basins totaling 18 acre-feet, holding post-development discharge below predevelopment rates |
| Coordinated with agencies | Secured Section 404 nationwide permit and county floodplain development approval for a 4-span bridge replacement in 11 weeks |
| Supported construction | Reviewed 240 submittals and answered 86 RFIs during a $14M campus utility project, with 3 change orders totaling under 2% of contract value |
| Did quantity takeoffs | Prepared engineer's estimates for 9 bid packages, with awarded bids landing within 7% of estimate on average |
Contract value, agency name and code edition are the three details that turn a civil bullet into a verifiable claim. A resume carrying all three per project reads as written by someone who sat through the review cycle.
Junior vs. senior
An entry-level civil resume leans on credentials and coursework because the project list is short. The FE Civil result with its date, the ABET program, the senior design or capstone project with its scope, internship work described in the same units as full-time work, and software depth from real drawing production rather than a class. Field and survey experience helps more than candidates expect, since it proves the drawings will be buildable. A one-page format with education high is correct here, and the first job resume guide covers the structure.
A licensed project engineer or project manager page reads on ownership and portfolio. Projects where the candidate was engineer of record, total design fee or construction value managed, clients and agencies worked with repeatedly, staff mentored and their calculations checked, proposals written and won, and the permitting history that shows a track record with reviewers. At this level a separate project list with name, value, role and year keeps the main document readable while giving the reader the depth they want.
Common mistakes in this role
These failures cost civil engineers interviews:
- Licensure status left implicit. No PE number, no EIT, no FE date. The reader assumes none of them and moves on to a resume that states it.
- Projects without value or size. Every project reads the same size when the numbers are missing, which flattens a decade of work into a job description.
- The discipline left vague. Structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources and land development are different hiring processes. A resume that will not choose loses all five.
- Codes named without editions or application. Listing ASCE 7 means little; stating which loads were derived from it on which structure means a great deal.
- Construction phase work omitted. Submittals, RFIs and site observation are billable services and prove the candidate has seen designs meet the field.
- A two-column layout. Screening software scrambles the license line and the project list; a single-column resume template keeps both intact.
Sample civil engineer resume
The example condenses the advice into a one-page resume for a licensed land development and municipal engineer. Names and companies are fictional.
Civil engineer with 8 years in land development and municipal infrastructure, licensed in Texas since 2021. Designed roadway, drainage and utility packages from $2M to $14M in construction value, with plan sets approved on first or second agency review. Works daily in Civil 3D, HEC-RAS and StormCAD, and carries projects through construction administration.

Frequently asked questions
How should the PE license appear on a civil engineer resume?
In the headline next to the name and again in an education and licensure section, with discipline, state, number and year. Comity registrations in other states and an NCEES Record belong on the same line, since multi-state firms search for exactly that. Candidates without the license state the FE result and EIT status instead.
Does the project list need construction values?
Yes. Construction value is the scale a civil hiring manager thinks in, and it is the fastest way to distinguish a candidate who has worked on $500,000 site packages from one who has run $20M corridor projects. Design fee works as a second figure for consultants.
How should a civil engineer handle several disciplines in one career?
Lead with the discipline the posting names and group the rest underneath. A summary that claims equal depth in structures, water resources and transportation reads as unfocused; a summary that names land development as the core with drainage modeling and roadway design as supporting areas reads as a specialist with range.
Do senior design and internships count as experience?
For the first two or three years, yes, when they are written in the same units as professional work: what was designed, at what scale, with which software and code. After the license and a real project list exist, they should shrink to a line or disappear.
