Paralegal resume: what to include and a sample

Updated: September 2026 · Dante Coledas, founder of chooseme

Whoever hires a paralegal is hiring throughput and reliability under deadline. Attorneys delegate the work that has a due date attached, so the questions behind the read are practical: how many matters can this person carry, do they know the filing rules of the courts we practice in, and have they run discovery at our volume. A resume that answers with counts and system names gets a call; one that lists duties in the abstract does not.

This guide covers what carries weight in the read, the keywords law firms and legal departments filter on, how to write bullets with caseload and filing numbers, what separates an entry-level paralegal from a senior one, and what a complete example looks like within the legal field.

What matters on a paralegal resume

Certification and training belong high on the page. A NALA Certified Paralegal (CP), an NFPA PACE-Registered Paralegal (RP), an ABA-approved paralegal certificate or an associate or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies should be readable before the experience section. Firms in states with voluntary certification still filter on those strings, and a notary commission alongside the credential is a frequent posting requirement worth a line of its own.

Practice area is the second filter. Litigation, corporate, real estate, immigration, estate planning, personal injury and intellectual property paralegals do different work with different software, and a resume that names the area in the headline is routed to the right hiring attorney. Litigation candidates should make court experience explicit: which state courts, which federal districts, and whether the filings were e-filed through CM/ECF, state portals or both.

Systems are the third. Case management (Clio, MyCase, Smokeball, ProLaw), document management (iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint), e-discovery (Relativity, Everlaw, Logikcull), research (Westlaw, LexisNexis) and e-filing platforms should appear by name in a short systems line and inside the bullets where they carried real volume. Trial technology, deposition digesting and cite-checking with the Bluebook round out the technical picture.

Keywords job postings look for

These terms show up most often in US paralegal postings:

  • Certified Paralegal (CP) or Registered Paralegal (RP)
  • Case management and docketing
  • E-filing, CM/ECF and PACER
  • Discovery responses and document production
  • Document review and privilege logs
  • Relativity, Everlaw, Logikcull
  • Clio, MyCase, ProLaw, iManage
  • Legal research, Westlaw, LexisNexis
  • Cite checking and Bluebook citation
  • Deposition summaries and trial binders
  • Subpoenas, summonses and service of process
  • Medical records review and chronologies
  • Client intake and correspondence
  • Calendaring and statute of limitations tracking
  • Notary public commission

They belong in the bullets first, tied to the matter type and the volume, and in the systems line second. Before applying to a specific posting, the tool to tailor a resume to the job shows which of the description's terms the document still lacks.

Experience bullets that work

The change from duty to result in paralegal work usually means adding caseload, filing counts or a turnaround figure:

AvoidBetter
Assisted attorneys with case preparationSupported 4 litigation attorneys across 60 active matters, preparing trial binders, exhibit lists and witness files for 9 trials and 14 arbitrations
Filed documents with the courtE-filed 430 documents through CM/ECF and three state portals with zero rejections over two years, tracking deadlines for 60 matters in ProLaw
Helped with discoveryAssembled responses to 210 interrogatories and 180 document requests, producing 95,000 pages with a privilege log of 1,400 entries
Reviewed documents for relevanceReviewed 48,000 documents in Relativity as first-level reviewer and trained 5 contract reviewers on the coding protocol
Prepared summaries of depositionsDigested 38 deposition transcripts averaging 240 pages, delivering indexed summaries within 48 hours of receipt
Handled client communicationRan intake for 300 new personal injury clients a year, collecting records from 90 providers and building medical chronologies for 45 cases

Matters supported, documents filed, review volume and turnaround time are the four numbers a supervising attorney reads as capacity. A resume that carries two per position is immediately easier to staff.

Junior vs. senior

An entry-level paralegal resume leans on the credential and on transferable administrative precision. The paralegal certificate or degree with relevant coursework, an internship or clerk position at a firm or courthouse, the systems learned in a practicum, a notary commission, and any prior job that ran on deadlines and document accuracy. Volume from a legal assistant or records role counts, and so does bilingual client intake, which many firms list as a requirement.

A senior paralegal resume describes ownership. Running the docket for a practice group, managing e-discovery projects and vendors, supervising and training junior paralegals and contract reviewers, building the workflows and templates the team uses, coordinating experts and trial logistics, and handling the largest or most complex matters in the group. Case management system administration and the design of the calendaring rules that prevent missed deadlines are senior signals that attorneys recognize immediately.

Common mistakes in this role

Paralegal resumes tend to fail in these places:

  1. No numbers. Without matters, filings, pages produced or review counts, a resume from a two-attorney office is indistinguishable from one in a national practice.
  2. Practice area left implicit. Litigation and corporate paralegal work share almost no daily tasks; a document that names neither is routed nowhere.
  3. Systems missing. Omitting the case management, e-discovery and e-filing platforms fails the keyword screen even when the experience is real.
  4. Duties copied from the posting. "Provided administrative support to attorneys" describes every job in the field.
  5. Unauthorized-practice phrasing. Bullets written as though the candidate gave legal advice or appeared for clients create a problem rather than an impression.
  6. A design that screening software breaks. Two columns and icons scramble the systems list; a one-column resume template keeps it parseable.

Frequently asked questions

Is paralegal certification required on the resume?

Not required in most states, but it is filtered on. A NALA Certified Paralegal or NFPA Registered Paralegal credential, or an ABA-approved certificate, gets the resume past screens that ask for it, and naming the awarding body and year matters as much as the credential itself.

How long should a paralegal resume be?

One page for the first several years, two pages only for senior paralegals with multiple practice areas, supervisory duties and a long systems list. Legal readers expect density and short lines, not narrative paragraphs.

Does a notary commission belong on a paralegal resume?

Yes, with the state and the expiration date. Many firm postings list it as a requirement or a preference because it removes a dependency in document execution, and the notary resume page covers how to present that work when it is the main role.

What if the experience comes from a legal assistant role?

Keep the actual title and let the bullets show substantive work: discovery assembly, filings, research, document review, client intake with volumes attached. Retitling a past position creates a verification problem; describing it accurately with numbers solves the credibility one.
