Canva solved a real problem: letting anyone without design training produce a good-looking document in minutes. Its resume templates number in the thousands, most are free, and they look far better than the average output of a word processor. That is why so many resumes now arrive on job boards made in Canva.
The problem shows up at the next step. At mid-size and large companies, the resume is not received first by a person but by an applicant tracking system (ATS) that extracts the text and sorts it into fields, and that process fails with a large share of what Canva produces. This guide explains why, how to check in one minute whether a specific resume has the problem, in which cases Canva is still a good choice, and what the alternatives are for everything else.

Why the ATS often cannot read a Canva resume
Canva is a graphics editor. It works with loose elements on a canvas: text boxes, shapes, images, icons. A Word or builder document has a text flow with an order; a Canva design has layers with a position. That difference is the root of nearly every automated-reading problem:
- Text turned into an image. Some exports (PDF with "Flatten PDF" checked, PNG or JPG, or designs with text effects such as shadows and curves) deliver the content as an image. To the system, the page is blank.
- Columns and reading order. Two-column templates with a sidebar are the majority. The ATS reads left to right and top to bottom; it merges the sidebar content with the main column and produces an experience section mixed with skills.
- Independent text boxes. Each block is a separate element, and the order in which the system finds them depends on the layer order, not on what is visible. The heading "Experience" can end up read after its content.
- Icons instead of labels. A phone icon followed by a number does not tell the system that the number is a phone. Without the word, the field stays empty.
- Skill bars and charts. They are shapes, not text. "Excel" with a bar at 80% is lost entirely; the system never finds the word Excel.
- Decorative typefaces and text effects. Irregular spacing, ligatures and outlines make the extractor split or merge letters: "Marketing" can arrive as "M a r k e t i n g."
The result is a resume that looks flawless on screen and reaches the recruiter incomplete, scrambled or empty. How that extraction process works is explained in the guide on what an ATS is.
How to check it in one minute
There is no need to guess. A home test reproduces, roughly, what a screening system does with the file:
- Open the PDF exported from Canva in any viewer.
- Select all the content (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A) and copy it.
- Paste it into Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, or any plain-text editor.
- Read what appeared.
If nothing pasted, the text is an image. If everything pasted but in an order that makes no sense (skills in the middle of the experience, dates separated from titles), the system will read it just as badly. If it appears complete, in order and with whole words, the file is fit as far as extraction goes.
The home test does not measure everything. An ATS checker also evaluates whether section headings are recognized, whether dates are in a parsable format and whether the resume contains the posting's keywords. The free ATS resume checker returns that diagnosis on the actual file:
If the Canva resume has already gone out to several applications with no response, this test is the first thing to do. An unreadable file explains the silence more often than the content does.
When to use Canva anyway
None of the above means Canva is a bad tool. It means its natural output is not suited to automated reading. When that reading does not happen, the problem disappears:
- Creative fields. Design, advertising, video, illustration. There a resume with visual judgment adds value, and the recipient is usually a person, not a system. The limits are still those of any creative resume: readability, contrast and hierarchy.
- In-person or direct-email delivery. Applying at a local business, an interview arranged through a contact, a small agency that asks for the resume by email. Nobody will run the file through an ATS.
- As a supporting piece. A Canva resume can accompany a plain one: the first shows judgment, the second guarantees the reading. In creative fields that combination is common.
- Job fairs and in-person events, where the document is looked at, not processed.
Even in those cases it pays to choose one-column templates, export as a standard PDF (not flattened, not an image), write contact details as text and skip the skill bars. Most Canva templates accept those changes without losing their look.
How to reduce the risk when sticking with Canva
Anyone who decides to build the resume in Canva for a process with an ATS can mitigate much of the problem with six adjustments:
- Pick a single-column template. In the template search, filtering by "simple" or "minimalist" gets close to the usable ones.
- Export as a standard PDF. Share → Download → PDF Standard. Do not check "Flatten PDF," do not choose "PDF Print" with crop marks, do not download as PNG or JPG.
- Write contact labels as text. "Phone," "Email," "LinkedIn," next to the data, even if there is an icon.
- Replace skill bars with lists of skills by name.
- Use standard typefaces without effects in the body text. Personality can go in the name and the headings.
- Run the copy-and-paste test after every export.
Even with all of this, the order of the text boxes still depends on the layers, and Canva offers no clear way to control it. That is why, for processes with automated screening, the recommendation is that the version being sent should not come out of Canva.
Alternatives by situation
The choice depends on where the file is going:
| Situation | Tool that fits |
|---|---|
| Applying through a job board or a large company's form (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever) | A builder with ATS-compatible templates, or a plain one-column document in Word or Docs |
| Creative field, sent directly to a person | Canva or a graphics editor, with a plain version in parallel |
| A resume already made in Canva that needs rescuing | Copy the text (using the test above) and pour it into a plain template; the content is kept, the layout is rebuilt |
| Design and guaranteed readability at the same time | Templates with visual variants on a one-column structure |
The chooseme resume templates start from that last point: real text, one column, standard headings, with color and typeface options that add personality without compromising extraction. The complete rules for getting any file through the filters are in the guide to an ATS-friendly resume, and the export details are in the guide to a resume PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Does a resume made in Canva pass ATS screening?
Often, no. Two-column templates, loose text boxes, unlabeled icons and some exports that turn text into an image cause the system to read the content incomplete or out of order. A one-column template exported as a standard PDF has a better chance, but it should be checked.
How do I know if a Canva resume is readable by an ATS?
Open the PDF, select all, copy and paste into Notepad or another plain-text editor. If nothing appears, the text is an image; if it appears scrambled, the system will read it that way. An ATS checker completes the test with section and keyword recognition.
Which format should a resume be exported in from Canva?
PDF Standard, from Share → Download. Not PNG or JPG (they are images), not "PDF Print" with crop marks, and without "Flatten PDF" checked, which turns the text into an image.
When does it make sense to use Canva for a resume?
In creative fields, when the resume is handed over in person or emailed directly to a person, at job fairs, or as a supporting piece alongside a plain resume. In every case where there is no screening system in between.
How do I rescue a resume that was already made in Canva?
Copy the text from the PDF and pour it into a plain one-column template, in a builder or a word processor. The content (experience, achievements, education) is preserved in full; only the layout is rebuilt, which is the fast part.
Is Canva free for making a resume?
Most resume templates and the PDF export are included in the free plan. Some templates, graphic elements and typefaces are paid and are marked as such. None of those elements is needed for a resume.
