A copywriter is hired for two things that rarely appear on the same resume: range and results. Range means the ability to write a landing page, a subject line, a product description and a brand manifesto without sounding like the same piece four times. Results mean that at least some of that writing was tested against an alternative and won. Whoever screens the resume is looking for the portfolio link first and the conversion evidence second, and a document that offers neither gets closed quickly.
This guide covers what carries weight in the read, the keywords postings filter on, how to write bullets that attach numbers to writing, what separates a junior from a senior resume in this role, and what a complete example looks like within the marketing field.

What matters on a copywriter resume
The portfolio link belongs in the contact line, not buried at the bottom, and it should lead to a curated set of pieces with the brief and the outcome stated, not a scroll of everything ever written. Six strong pieces across different formats beat forty. When work is under NDA, a short written description of the brief, the constraint and the result works as a substitute, and it is standard practice in agency hiring.
The resume itself is a writing sample, which is why this role penalizes clutter more than any other in the field. Tight bullets, varied sentence structure, no filler adjectives, no "passionate wordsmith" in the summary. A hiring manager reads the first three lines as an audition; if they contain three clichés, the portfolio never gets opened.
Evidence of testing is the differentiator between a competent writer and a hireable one. Subject line tests, landing page variants, ad copy iterations, email flows: each of these produces a number. Formats owned should be explicit too, because postings are specific about them: long-form landing pages, email sequences, paid social hooks, product and category descriptions, scripts, brand voice documentation. Named brand voice or messaging framework work is worth its own line.
Keywords job postings look for
These terms repeat across US copywriter postings:
- Brand voice and tone of voice guidelines
- Landing page copy and conversion copywriting
- Email marketing copy and lifecycle sequences
- Ad copy for paid search and paid social
- Product descriptions and category pages
- Long-form content and editorial writing
- SEO copywriting and search intent
- Messaging frameworks and value propositions
- A/B testing of headlines and subject lines
- Content calendar and editorial workflow
- Creative briefs and stakeholder feedback cycles
- CMS publishing (WordPress, Webflow, Contentful)
- Klaviyo, HubSpot or Mailchimp
- AP style and copy editing
- Script writing for video and audio
They belong inside the experience bullets, attached to the piece and its result, with a short skills section listing formats and tools. Before applying to a specific posting, the tool to tailor a resume to the job shows which of the description's terms the resume still lacks.
Experience bullets that work
The pattern is simple: name the format, the volume and what the writing did.
| Avoid | Better |
|---|---|
| Wrote copy for the marketing team | Wrote 40 landing pages for paid search campaigns, with the winning variant raising demo requests from 3.1% to 5.4% of sessions |
| Created email campaigns | Wrote a 7-email onboarding sequence in Klaviyo that lifted first-purchase rate from 12% to 19% across 40,000 new subscribers |
| Responsible for website content | Rewrote 320 product descriptions on a 6-week deadline, contributing to a 22% lift in organic category traffic |
| Helped develop brand voice | Authored the brand voice guide and trained 11 writers and 3 agencies on it, cutting revision rounds per asset from 4 to 2 |
| Wrote social media captions | Wrote hooks for 150 short-form videos, with the top 10 producing 4.2M views and a 6.1% profile visit rate |
| Tested different headlines | Ran 48 subject line tests over 3 quarters, lifting average open rate from 21% to 32% on a 260,000-address list |
One tested piece with a number beats ten untested ones. Where testing was not possible, naming the volume, the deadline and the stakeholder count still gives the reader a sense of scale.
Junior vs. senior
A junior copywriter is hired on range and coachability. The resume should show published pieces with links, volume delivered under deadline, formats attempted, and any editing or research responsibility that came with the job. Internships, student publications, freelance clients and self-published work all count if the writing is visible. What does not help is a list of adjectives about creativity; a portfolio with a stated brief per piece does the persuading.
A senior copywriter resume shifts toward ownership of voice and of other writers. It names the messaging framework built, the rebrand or campaign led, the freelancers and agencies directed, the review process designed, and the results across a program rather than a piece. Senior candidates also show commercial fluency: understanding of funnel stage, audience research conducted, and collaboration with performance marketing on what the copy needed to do. Creative director tracks begin here, and the resume should make clear whether the candidate wants to keep writing or to lead.
Common mistakes in this role
Copywriter resumes tend to fail in these places:
- No portfolio link. The single fastest rejection in this role. Even one public link changes the read.
- A portfolio that is a dump. Forty unsorted pieces with no brief force the reader to do the curation, and they will not.
- Clichés in the summary. "Passionate storyteller who loves words" is the phrase the role exists to avoid writing.
- Nothing measured. Copy that was never tested is common, but a resume with zero numbers anywhere reads as a writer who never asked what happened after publishing.
- Format confusion. A resume that does not distinguish long-form editorial from conversion copy gets filtered out of both.
- Design over substance. Custom layouts and decorative typography break in an ATS; a single-column resume template keeps the writing in front.

Frequently asked questions
What should a copywriter portfolio contain?
Six to ten pieces across different formats, each with a one-line brief, the constraint and the outcome where one is known. A landing page, an email sequence, an ad set, a long-form piece and a voice document cover most postings. Curation is part of what is being evaluated.
How is NDA work handled on a resume?
By describing the brief, the format, the audience and the result without naming the client or reproducing the copy: "wrote the launch landing page for a national insurance product, tested against control, 18% lift in quote starts." This is normal practice and no reasonable hiring manager objects to it.
Do copywriters need SEO experience?
For content and e-commerce roles, usually yes at a working level: search intent, keyword placement in headings and metadata, internal linking. Deep technical SEO belongs to a specialist, but a copywriter who cannot brief against a keyword loses out on a large share of postings.
Should the resume mention use of AI writing tools?
Only as a workflow detail if the employer's posting raises it, and never as a headline skill. What gets hired is editorial judgment, research and voice. Listing a generation tool where a result belongs suggests the opposite.
