Whoever hires a digital marketer is buying acquisition at a price they can live with. The resume gets read for three things: how much money was managed, what it produced, and whether the candidate can tell the difference between a channel that scales and one that only looks good in a screenshot. Someone who ran $60,000 a month across Google Ads and Meta and held cost per acquisition flat while volume doubled has a very different profile from someone who published campaigns another team briefed.
This guide covers what carries weight in the read, the platform and measurement keywords postings filter on, how to turn channel work into bullets with budget and CAC numbers, what separates a junior from a senior resume in this role, and what a complete example looks like within the marketing field.

What matters on a digital marketing resume
Every experience bullet should carry a budget or a volume figure. Digital marketing roles are scoped by spend, and a hiring manager decides in seconds whether a candidate has operated at their scale: $8,000 a month across two channels is a different job from $250,000 a month across six. The number belongs in the bullet, not in a vague summary line, and it should sit next to what the spend returned (cost per acquisition, cost per lead, return on ad spend, signups, revenue).
Channel breadth matters, but only when it is honest. Postings usually name a primary channel (paid search, paid social, lifecycle email) plus supporting ones, so the resume should make clear which channels were owned end to end and which were coordinated with an agency or a specialist. Claiming full ownership of six channels at once reads as inflated, and the interview exposes it quickly.
The skills section should be grouped: paid media platforms, analytics and measurement, automation and CRM, SEO tooling, creative and landing page tools. Analytics fluency is the differentiator at every level, so GA4, Google Tag Manager, Search Console and conversion tracking need to be visible. Certifications from Google Ads, GA4, Meta Blueprint and HubSpot take one line in education with the year.
Keywords job postings look for
These terms repeat across US digital marketing postings:
- Google Ads (Search, Performance Max, Shopping) and Microsoft Ads
- Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Ads, TikTok Ads
- Paid search, paid social and programmatic display
- Cost per acquisition (CPA) and cost per lead (CPL)
- Return on ad spend (ROAS) and CAC to LTV ratio
- Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager and Looker Studio
- Conversion tracking, UTM parameters and attribution modeling
- A/B testing and landing page optimization
- HubSpot, Marketo or Klaviyo marketing automation
- Email marketing, segmentation and lifecycle campaigns
- Audience targeting, lookalike audiences and remarketing
- Budget management and media planning
- SEO fundamentals and Search Console
- Demand generation and funnel metrics (MQL, SQL)
- Google Ads Search Certification, GA4 Certification, Meta Blueprint
They belong first inside the experience bullets tied to the campaign where they were used, and second in a grouped skills list. Before applying to a specific posting, the tool to tailor a resume to the job shows which terms from the description the resume still lacks.
Experience bullets that work
Turning channel work into evidence almost always means adding spend and a rate:
| Avoid | Better |
|---|---|
| Managed paid advertising campaigns | Managed $52,000 monthly across Google Ads and Meta for a DTC brand, cutting blended CPA from $61 to $38 while holding volume at 1,300 orders a month |
| Ran email marketing | Rebuilt the Klaviyo lifecycle program into 9 automated flows, lifting email revenue share from 14% to 27% of monthly sales |
| Improved website conversions | Ran 22 landing page A/B tests in 8 months, raising trial signup conversion from 2.4% to 3.9% on 180,000 monthly sessions |
| Reported on campaign performance | Built a Looker Studio dashboard joining GA4, Google Ads and HubSpot data, replacing 6 hours of weekly manual reporting for a 5-person team |
| Grew leads for the sales team | Generated 740 MQLs a quarter at $94 per lead through paid search and gated content, sourcing 31% of closed-won pipeline |
| Launched new channels | Tested LinkedIn Ads and TikTok Ads with a $15,000 pilot, kept LinkedIn at a $210 CPL and shut TikTok down after 6 weeks of no qualified volume |
Budget, cost per acquisition and the absolute volume behind the percentage are the three numbers a marketing director looks for. A resume carrying all three in each position reads as written by someone who has owned a P&L line.
Junior vs. senior
A junior digital marketer usually supports campaigns rather than owning budgets, and the resume should show hands-on platform work anyway: campaigns built and launched, audiences and tracking configured, reports produced, tests run. Certifications carry more weight at this stage than later, and a small personal or freelance project with real spend (even a few hundred dollars) proves more than a coursework portfolio. Making the tools explicit matters, because juniors get filtered on platform names.
A senior resume moves from channels to strategy and money. It describes the channel mix designed and why, the annual budget owned, the agency or in-house team managed, the measurement stack rebuilt, the CAC trajectory across years, and the decisions that were reversed when data said so. Cross-functional work with sales, product and finance belongs here, along with headcount managed and the hiring done. Seniority in this role reads as budget scale plus judgment, not as a longer tool list.
Common mistakes in this role
Digital marketing resumes tend to fail in these places:
- No budget anywhere. Without a spend figure the reader cannot place the candidate, and the default assumption is small.
- Percentages without volume. "Improved ROAS by 40%" on $3,000 of spend does not survive comparison with a candidate who held ROAS at 4.1 on $400,000.
- Claiming the whole funnel. Attributing all revenue growth to paid media invites a question the candidate cannot answer. Naming the contribution is stronger.
- Agency work described as personal work. When an agency ran the account, the resume should say what was directed and what was executed.
- Analytics left implicit. GA4, tag management and attribution are in most postings now; silence on them suggests someone who only sees platform dashboards.
- A design that screening software breaks. Two columns, icons and skill bars scramble in an ATS; a single-column resume template keeps the numbers readable.

Frequently asked questions
What if the budgets managed were small?
Small budgets are fine when they are stated with the result. A candidate who ran $6,000 a month and held a $40 CPA across 18 months shows control, which is what the reader is testing. Hiding the number is worse, because it reads as an attempt to look bigger than the experience.
Should the resume list every advertising platform used?
Only the ones used seriously enough to discuss for ten minutes. Eight platforms with two campaigns each dilute the three that matter and invite interview questions the candidate will lose. Grouping by primary and supporting channels solves this in one line.
Digital marketing manager or growth marketer: which title?
Whichever the posting uses, as long as the work matches. Growth roles lean toward experimentation, product-led acquisition and retention; digital marketing roles lean toward channel and budget ownership. The headline can change per application without changing any facts, and the guide to tailoring a resume to the job covers how far that adjustment can go.
How should agency experience be presented?
By client type and spend rather than by client name where confidentiality applies: "managed 6 e-commerce accounts totaling $180,000 in monthly spend." Agency candidates should also make clear what they owned directly, since breadth without depth is the usual concern on that side.
