Sales representative resume: what to include and a full sample

Updated: September 2026 · Dante Coledas, founder of chooseme

Whoever hires a sales representative wants to know three things before anything else: whether the candidate has carried a quota, how much of it was attained, and whether the pipeline behind those results was built by the candidate or handed over. The sales manager reading the resume is also estimating ramp time: how long until this person produces in a new territory with a new product.

Most sales representative resumes fail because they describe the job instead of the record: "responsible for the Northeast territory," "built relationships with customers." This guide covers what carries weight in the reading, which terms postings filter on, how to turn duties into bullets with numbers and what a complete resume looks like for this role within the sales field.

In this guide

What matters on a sales representative resume

The experience section decides the outcome. For each position the reader expects the product and segment sold (industrial supplies to distributors, insurance to consumers, software to small businesses), the territory or book size, the annual quota, the attainment percentage and, when it helps, a rank against the team. Those data points belong in the first two bullets, not the fifth.

The summary is the second most-read block, because "sales representative" covers inside and outside sales, transactional and consultative cycles, B2B and B2C. Three lines stating the segment, the typical deal size, the sales cycle and the best year orient the reader faster than any list of strengths. Awards (President's Club, Rep of the Year) get their own line under the position where they were earned, with the year and the size of the group.

Skills and education carry less weight. The skills block should name the CRM and prospecting tools and the sales methodology, if there was one. A Bachelor's appears in many B2B postings and is worth one line; in most other cases the quota record outweighs the degree.

Keywords job postings look for

The terms that repeat in sales representative postings on US job boards:

  • Quota attainment
  • Territory management
  • Pipeline management
  • Prospecting (cold calling, cold email, referrals)
  • Lead qualification
  • Consultative selling
  • Product demonstrations
  • Upselling and cross-selling
  • Contract negotiation
  • Salesforce, HubSpot or Zoho CRM
  • Sales forecasting
  • Account growth and retention
  • Trade shows and field visits
  • Route planning (outside sales)
  • B2B or B2C, as the posting says

The right place for them is inside the bullets, next to a number, and again in the skills section for the ones that matter most. Before applying to a specific posting, the tool to tailor a resume to the job shows which terms from the ad are missing from the document.

Experience bullets that work

The difference between a duty and a result is visible on the first read. These pairs show the change:

Junior vs. senior

A junior sales representative (inside sales, entry-level outside sales, a first quota after retail or hospitality) rarely has a full year of attainment to show. The resume should lean on activity metrics that were measured (calls, meetings, demos), on any partial-year result ("102% of quota in the first two full quarters"), on customer-facing volume from previous jobs (upsells per shift, membership sign-ups) and on ramp speed: reaching full quota in month four is a result worth stating. The guide on a resume with no experience covers how to fill the page without inflating it.

A senior representative is judged by consistency and scale: attainment for at least three consecutive years, the size of the territory or book, the largest deal, new-logo revenue versus expansion revenue, and influence beyond the individual number (onboarding new reps, opening a territory from zero, being the reference for a product line). Two pages are acceptable past ten years, with the last two positions taking most of the space.

A senior resume that shows only one good year raises the question of what happened in the others. Three years of attainment, even with one at 92%, read as more credible than a single 140%.

Common mistakes in this role

Sales representative resumes tend to fail in the same places:

  1. Duties without a quota. "Responsible for the Southeast territory" gives the reader nothing to evaluate. Every position needs the quota and the percentage.
  2. Revenue without context. "$2M in sales" means little without the period, the quota and the average deal size.
  3. Omitting a bad year. Leaving out the numbers for one position makes the reader assume the worst. A year at 85% with its cause is better than a blank.
  4. Team results presented as personal. Regional or branch figures collapse at the first interview question.
  5. Adjectives in place of evidence. "Driven hunter with a passion for exceeding goals" occupies the line where a rank should go.
  6. A cluttered template. Sales managers read resumes on a phone between meetings; a one-column resume template with bold titles and short bullets gets read to the end.

Frequently asked questions

How should quota attainment appear on a sales representative resume?

As a percentage next to the quota it refers to, per year: "118% of a $1.35M quota, 2024." Attainment without the quota amount is hard to evaluate, because 150% of a tiny number is not impressive. A rank ("#2 of 24 reps") gives the percentage a scale.

What if I missed quota in a given year?

Show the year with its number and, if there was a specific cause (a new territory, a supply problem, a launch that slipped), a few words of context. Omitting the year creates a gap that gets noticed and assumed to be worse than it was.

Does a sales representative need a Bachelor's degree on the resume?

Many B2B postings list a Bachelor's as required or preferred, and it is worth one line if it exists. Without one, a strong quota record and relevant certifications (HubSpot, a manufacturer's product certification) carry the application in most inside and outside sales roles.

Should awards like President's Club be on the resume?

Yes, under the position where they were earned, with the year and the size of the group ("President's Club 2023, top 5% of 80 reps"). An award without a date or a group size reads as decoration.
