An accounting analyst sits between the accountants who post the entries and the finance team that explains the results. Whoever hires for it wants someone who can look at 200 accounts, spot the one that moved for the wrong reason, explain it in a sentence and fix the process so it does not happen again. The resume has to show analysis with dollar amounts, data skills beyond basic Excel and evidence of process improvement.
Many candidates present this role as a junior accountant job, which undersells it, or as FP&A, which misdescribes it. This guide explains what an accounting manager reads for, which terms the postings screen for, how to write bullets that show analysis rather than bookkeeping, and what a complete resume looks like within the administration field.

What matters on an accounting analyst resume
The experience section should read as a series of findings and fixes: variances explained, accruals corrected, duplicate charges identified, reports automated. Each bullet needs a dollar amount, a percentage or a time saved. The number of accounts analyzed and the size of the entity give the reader the scale; the outcome gives them the reason to call.
Data skills weigh more than in a general accountant resume. SQL queries against the ERP, Power BI or Tableau dashboards, Power Query and advanced Excel, Alteryx workflows: these are the tools that separate an analyst from a staff accountant, and the resume should show what was built with them, not just list them.
Education is a Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance or a related field; a CPA is welcome but less often required than for an accountant, and a CMA fits the analytical profile well. Technical accounting exposure (ASC 606 revenue recognition, ASC 842 leases, intercompany) is worth a line when it is real.
Keywords job postings look for
These terms appear consistently in accounting analyst postings in the US:
- Variance analysis and flux analysis
- Account analysis and reconciliation review
- Month-end close support
- Intercompany transactions and eliminations
- Accrual analysis
- Revenue recognition (ASC 606)
- Lease accounting (ASC 842)
- Financial reporting and management reports
- Process improvement and automation
- SQL
- Power BI or Tableau
- Excel (Power Query, pivot tables, complex formulas)
- ERP systems (Oracle Fusion, SAP S/4HANA, NetSuite, Workday Financials)
- Alteryx
- Internal controls and SOX support
Use the terms inside bullets that carry a figure ("flux analysis on 200 accounts, explaining every variance over $25,000") and keep the tool names in the skills list. The tool to tailor the resume to a posting highlights the required terms that the document still lacks.
Experience bullets that work
The reader wants to see what the analysis found. These pairs show the difference:
| Avoid | Better |
|---|---|
| Performed variance analysis | Ran monthly flux analysis on 200+ GL accounts and explained every variance over $25,000 by day 4 of the close |
| Reviewed accruals | Identified $340,000 in duplicate accruals across 3 business units during a balance sheet review and led the correcting entries |
| Prepared reports for management | Built a Power BI reporting package for 6 department heads that replaced 14 manual Excel files and saved 12 hours a month |
| Supported intercompany accounting | Reconciled intercompany balances for 9 entities and reduced unmatched items from $1.2M to under $50,000 in 2 quarters |
| Assisted with revenue recognition | Analyzed 80 customer contracts under ASC 606 and documented the performance obligations that moved $2.1M of revenue to the correct period |
| Improved processes | Automated the fixed-asset roll-forward with Power Query and SQL, cutting preparation time from 2 days to 3 hours |
Junior vs. senior
A junior accounting analyst (0 to 2 years) usually arrives from a staff accountant role, an internship or a data-focused degree. The resume should stress the analytical pieces of previous work (any variance explanation, any report built, any reconciliation review) and the tools already mastered, with a short project or two if the work history is thin. A clear summary that names SQL or Power BI is often what gets the interview.
A senior accounting analyst (4 or more years) should show ownership of a reporting cycle, technical topics handled end to end (ASC 606, ASC 842, consolidations), controls documented for SOX, projects such as an ERP migration, and the training or review of junior staff. Dollar amounts should grow into the millions, and the bullets should mention the decisions the analysis supported. A CPA or CMA becomes a differentiator at this level.
An accounting analyst bullet without a finding ("performed analysis") is a staff accountant bullet. Every analysis has a result: an amount, a correction, a report, a decision.
Common mistakes in this role
The resumes for this role fail for reasons that are easy to fix:
- Describing bookkeeping instead of analysis. Posting entries and running reconciliations belong to a staff role; the analyst bullets should describe what was found.
- Listing tools without outputs. "Power BI, SQL, Alteryx" in a skills list is not evidence; "built a 6-page Power BI package" is.
- No dollar amounts. Variances, corrections and savings all have amounts; leaving them out removes the strongest content.
- Confusing the role with FP&A. Budgets and forecasts belong on a financial analyst resume; an accounting analyst resume should stay on actuals, close and reporting.
- Two pages for a mid-level profile. One page fits 6 years of this work; a second page tends to fill with duties.
- A template that fights the content. Tables and charts do not belong on the resume; a clean one-column resume template leaves the numbers to do the work.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an accounting analyst and a staff accountant on a resume?
The staff accountant resume shows the books being kept: entries, reconciliations, statements. The accounting analyst resume shows what the numbers reveal: variances explained, errors found, reports built, processes improved. The same job history can support either, depending on which bullets lead.
Does an accounting analyst need a CPA?
Not usually. Many postings ask for a Bachelor's in Accounting and strong Excel or SQL, with a CPA or CMA listed as preferred. If the exam is in progress, state the exact status in the summary.
Which technical skills matter most for an accounting analyst resume?
Advanced Excel (Power Query, pivot tables), SQL for pulling data from the ERP, and one visualization tool (Power BI or Tableau). The ERP itself (Oracle, SAP, NetSuite, Workday) should be named, and each tool should appear at least once inside a bullet with an output.
How should an accounting analyst quantify bullets?
With the amount analyzed or corrected, the number of accounts or entities covered, the time saved by an automation and the day of the close by which the work was delivered. When exact figures are confidential, rounded amounts or percentages are acceptable.
